On International Women’s Day: Take Bold Action.
If we don’t, who will?

Six pioneering women scientists will be immortalized by LEGO as a new set of mini figures. The Women of NASA figures include mathematician and space scientist Katherine Johnson (of the film Hidden Figures fame, known for her work on the Apollo and Mercury programs in the 1960s), computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (who worked on the Apollo missions in the 1960s), astronaut and physician Mae Jemison (who became the first African American woman to travel in space on the Endeavor in 1992), astronomer Nancy Grace Roman (the first woman executive at NASA, also known as the “Mother of Hubble” for her work on the telescope) and astronaut and physicist Sally Ride, (the first woman astronaut in 1983).

The thought behind the Women of NASA series is noble: to present children with female role models in the fields of STEM (science technology, engineering and mathematics). But are these historic contributions of women pioneers enough to encourage girls into science? Will they help propel women into positions of scientific leadership? It seems to us that continued and visible recognition of the achievements that women routinely make in the sciences are what’s needed if girls and women are to be attracted to the field.

In November, 500 women scientists signed a letter saying that “Across the globe, women in science face discrimination, unequal pay, and reduced opportunities,” citing an era of anti-science and misinformation. Read the full letter here. These women scientists call for action to “increase diversity in science and other disciplines” and pledge to:

When Women Lead - Part 2

When Women Lead (Part 2)

A year ago 2020 Women on Boards published a mid-year report entitled “When Women Lead” which looked at the gender diversity on corporate boards when women were in positions of influence – CEO, Board Chair or Nominating Chair. We also compiled information on the female directors at Fortune 1000 companies to determine whether the same women served on multiple boards or whether there were a large group of women serving on just one board.

This year, we updated the information with the 2016 Fortune 1000 data and saw a trend. In 2016 there are 55 female CEOs, six more than in 2015. The average percentage of women on their boards is 30.8%, up from 29.8% in 2015. By comparison, the average percentage of women on the boards of companies with male CEOs is 18.2%. Also, 91% of companies with a female CEO have reached 2020 Women on Boards’ target of having 20% or more board seats held by women.

There are currently 43 female Chairs of the Board among the 2016 Fortune 1000 companies, up from 37 in 2015. On the boards of these 43 companies, an average of 29.7% of the seats are held by women, up from 27.7% in 2015. This compares to 18.3% women on boards when men are Board Chairs. Eighty-eight percent are Winning “W” Companies at 20% or more women, down one percentage point from 2015.

Women: Not Present on IPO Company Boards

0
0

For years we have heard that men largely populate the boards of IPO companies. We decided to test that precept. 2020 Women on Boards looked at the gender composition of the boards of directors for the 25 largest IPOs[1] in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and the results are worse than expected. It is widely accepted that IPO company boards are populated by venture capital appointees who are mostly white men, but we hoped that at the point of going public, companies would recognize that board diversity is essential to success. Not so. Of the 75 largest IPOs from 2014 to 2016, nearly half, or 37 companies, went public with no women on their boards. Another 25%, or 19 companies, had only one woman. In other words, between 2014-2016, three fourths of companies with the largest IPOs went public with one or no women on their boards.

The optimists among us might assume that these companies would correct this judgement error in the first year or two of operating in the public eye—and in fact, several of them did. The number of Zero ‘Z’ Companies with no women on their boards dropped from 37 to 22, or 30%, and the number of Token ‘T’ Companies with one (token) woman rose from 19 to 27, or 37%, as ‘Z’ companies added a woman. Additionally, two all-male IPO companies that failed to diversify were no longer trading by May 2017. Nevertheless, even after a year or two of being public, two thirds of the companies still had one or no female directors.

Every year 2020 Women on Boards publishes the Gender Diversity Index (GDI). In 2016, the percentage of women on the boards of GDI companies rose to 19.7% and the percentage of women on the 2016 Fortune 1000 list was 18.8%. When we compare this progress to the recent IPOs where the percentage of women on these boards is 9.4%, we see how far we need to go.
